The Story
After all these years of living south of the border, I feel this way more than ever! "Friendly people everywhere you go, even when "yo no comprendo"." It's not just here in Mexico, but Belize, the Caribbean, Costa Rica, and so many places far away from the fast-paced world "up there". There's a laid-back vibe you that permeates the air. You can taste in the the tacos, you can see it in the smiles on people's faces, you can feel it with every splashing wave that rolls onto the shore, and you can view it in every sunset. It's a feeling you just can't beat when you find yourself lucky enough to be "down here".
Lyrics
Sandy beaches and panga boats Spicy tacos and Pacificos Smiling faces and warm hellos And fishing off the pier Senoritas with pretty smiles Kilometers instead of miles The pace of life is just my style That’s why I’m down here Down here, when you ask why I’m down here And whatever made this long-lost ex-pat disappear Down here It’s friendly people everywhere you go Even when yo no comprendo You learn fast to take it slow And shift to another gear It’s little kids splashing in the tide Sit and watch as sailboats slide On blue water beneath a sunny sky That’s why I’m down here Still grinning ear to ear It’s having beaches all to myself And each day there’s a story to tell Just came down for the weekend Now it’s been years Down here Fresh flounder and shrimp on the grill Pop another clam out of a shell Twenty pesos for a dollar bill And that’ll buy a beer On an endless stretch of golden sand Feel that salt upon my skin Seagulls soaring on the wind And suddenly it’s so clear That’s why I’m down here Down here, don’t think I’ll ever leave down here So give my regards to the crazy world up there From down here, way down here They can drag me north but I’ll still wind up down here Down here
